KN95 Masks (20-Pack) Disposable 3-layer Mask-2020

Disposable 3-layer mask is a disposable 3-layer respirator. This mask is used to particulate-filtering ventilators, which meets the required standard by health organizations. The mask has 3-layers to ensure it filters 95% of all airborne particles. Also, the mask is known to provide protection against particles but not vapor or gasses.

KN95 Face Mask

The KN95 face mask is prepared using a synthetic polymer fine mesh called nonwoven polypropylene. This polymer makes the inner mask filtration layer, which removes all the hazardous objects or particles.

In healthcare, the mask is used for protection against viruses and during the surgical process. Medical practitioners who come into contact with the infected people are required to wear respiratory protective gear, including masks such as disposable 3-layer masks like KN95. Thus, protecting the medical officers from patients’ droplets as well as airborne particles.

Other uses of disposable 3-layer masks like KN95 mask include different industries such as painting, construction, and mining. Besides, KN95 has been proven to be safe to use for protection against nanoparticles that are produced during the engineering process.

In areas where there is no great concern about infectious diseases, the user can reuse the kn95 mask until they are soiled or damaged.

In the case of KN95 shortage

Situations where there is a crisis, and there is an inadequate supply of kn95 face mask, they can be reused several times. Reuse is advisable only when patients’ fluids or aerosol-generating procedures did not contaminate it though it increases the masking risk of contamination.

Therefore, the following procedure should be followed to reduce any contact transmission.

  1. Regularly wash your hands with alcohol-based sanitizer or with running water and soap after and before touch the mask.
  2. Use a cleanable shield on the kn95, which you can take off and clean with no water at the end of use.
  3. Do not use any kn95 face mask used when you were in contact with any contaminated fluid or nasal secretion as well as other patient’s fluids.
  4. Discard kn95 face mask that used during the aerosol-generating surgical procedures.
  5. The more you are a far from contaminated patients, you can extend the use of kn95 face mask.

You can hang the used kn95 mask is a clean and designated area. The container has to be breathable, and between papers, hence reducing any cross-contamination. While in-store, the disposable 3-layer face mask should be in a labeled to avoid picking the wrong face mask. The kn95 storage should be cleaned regularly or disposed of after use.

While using your face mask, it is advisable to avoid touching the inside part. If any contact is made on the inside part, you will remove the mask and perform thorough hygiene.

Perform a user seal check and wear clean gloves donning the used kn95 face mask. Dispose of the gloves after use and ensure the mask is comfortably placed on your face.

The initial wearer can only reuse kn95 masks since multiple wearers can easily spread pathogens, thus spreading the infection.

Precautions during the reuse of the KN95 face mask

It is good to know that many masks are produced to be used once. Still, when there is a limited supply, other global medical organizations such as the Center for Disease Control (CDC) have provided precautions and recommendations to follow during a reuse process. Some of the methods are listed above.

The number of times one can reuse a kn95 mask depends on individuals personal comfort and factors such as,

For those who clean the mask frequently, it will start to deteriorate, affecting the number of times you will reuse the kn95 mask. Therefore, rather than specifying the number of times we can reuse, such guidelines will be provided.

The moment you notice deterioration, the mask should be disposed of. It is advisable to continually check your mask after cleaning it for any torn area. Besides, you will pay close attention to how the mask is fitting. The elastic strap can start to be loose and cannot cover the user’s face adequately, and the mask should be discarded.

Cleaning or disinfecting a kn95 face mask

For safe reuse of the kn95 face mask, you will inactivate the virus or pathogen without compromising the fit of the mask and its filtration.

It is highly recommended to replace kn95 or any other disposable 3-layer mask after use when the supply is available. But when the amount is limited, cleaning or disinfecting the mask is recommended before reuse.

To decontaminate the mask, you can use

  1. Vaporized Hydrogen Peroxide; which can penetrate through the kn95 layers without destroying it and killing the pathogens. Though, not all hospitals have such technology for disinfecting the disposable 3-layer mask.
  2. Heat; when the kn95 is exposed to a temperature of 70 degrees Celsius for 30 minutes, the virus and other pathogens will die without destroying the mask.
  3. Ultraviolet Germicidal Irradiation (UV-C) light; Recently, hospitals have used the UV-C to disinfect virus from mask. Exposing the contaminated kn95 face mask renders it virus free. This is the best method for cleaning a kn95 or any other disposable 3-layer face mask.

The exposure should be done to a maximum amount of light; a limited amount of UV light might leave some traces of pathogen.

Though these decontamination process should be the only method to mitigate when the supply is inadequate.

Kn95, as well as other disposable 3-layer face masks, cannot be washed at any moment. Therefore, you should never spray the mask with soapy water, aerosol, or alcohol.

These types of mask should never be boiled washed or steamed as it will quickly disintegrate filers used. Boiling is only allowed when your mask is made using paper on the inner or outer layers

Disposable 3-layer masked include N95, Kn95, among other masks. These two are similar in many ways except few areas. Both are Personal Protective Equipment used to protect the user from airborne and other liquid contaminations. Also, they are proven fore health care use during the pandemic. The ‘N’ means they are non-resistant to oil. ’95’ is an indication that they can prevent at least 95% of 0.3 Micron.
